In 2014, fresh out of university, I stepped into my first role as an embedded systems engineer. It was an exciting yet daunting experience. Like many new engineers, I quickly realized the gap between academic knowledge and industry demands. Suddenly, I was surrounded by unfamiliar tools, jargon, and workflows in a field that felt overwhelmingly complex.
Thankfully, I had mentors who guided me through those formative years. Kent, my first mentor, taught me not just technical skills, but the mindset needed to thrive in this dynamic field. From him, I learned to think critically, write clean and maintainable code, and design systems in a structured, sustainable way. Under the guidance of Peter, our Software Architect, I learned about architecture-driven design, test-driven development, and effective project management.
These lessons became the foundation of my career. Over the years, I’ve experienced both successes and failures, but the principles I developed early on have consistently guided me toward growth and achievement.
